Our experts have accumulated decades of knowledge in a range of industry sectors. Working independently and impartially, we advise many of the biggest names in industry, using our experience from different sectors together to find the best solutions to specific challenges.

Oil & Gas and Energy Transition Room
Advanced Materials and Their Environmental Performance
As part of the Welding, Joining & Manufacturing Exhibition TWI is holding at their headquarters in Cambridge, there will be a number of workshops focussed on our industry-specific activities.
This dedicated Oil & Gas and Energy Transition workshop brings together industry, academia and regulatory experts to explore the environmental and materials challenges associated with low-carbon and offshore energy systems.
Structured across three focused technical sessions, the programme will examine the performance of advanced materials in demanding service environments, the integrity risks associated with emerging energy technologies, and the innovations supporting safer and more sustainable operations.
- Session 1 – Environmental Challenges Associated with Low-Carbon Energy Solutions (09:00 – 10:20):
The opening session addresses the environmental and integrity implications of energy transition technologies, including carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen embrittlement, and methanol service. Expert speakers will present insights followed by an interactive panel discussion with representatives from industry, research and regulatory bodies.
- Session 2 – Materials Advances for Energy (10:40 – 12:00):
This session focuses on materials innovation for current and future energy systems. Topics include the sour performance of additively manufactured Alloy 718, hydrogen embrittlement of AM materials, and advances in polymeric materials for pressurised fluid containment. The session concludes with a panel discussion examining qualification challenges, performance validation and deployment in safety-critical environments.
- Session 3 – Materials Challenges in Offshore Environments (13:00 – 14:20):
The afternoon session explores the integrity of materials in offshore service, including surfacing technologies, field integrity management, and operator perspectives. A final panel discussion will bring together speakers to debate the key technical barriers and opportunities for offshore applications in both traditional oil and gas and emerging energy sectors.
- Session 4 – Masterclass on Where Welding Goes Wrong (15:00 – 16:30):
The masterclass will be presented by Dr Dave Howse, Technology Fellow, TWI Ltd, and Joanna Nicholls, Consultant, TWI Ltd, covering Where Welding Goes Wrong – Flaws and Consequences.
This workshop offers delegates:
- Insight into materials performance in low-carbon and offshore environments
- Direct engagement with leading technical specialists
- Panel discussions encouraging cross-sector dialogue
- Networking opportunities during coffee breaks and lunch

TWI/JCB SKILLS ZONE | Chair: Jason Gregory, Director of Training
Come and visit TWI’s Skills Area at the WeldJoin Expo to learn more about how TWI can meet your training and welding professional needs and participate in the discussions on how we can address the welding skills gap in the UK.
There will be a comprehensive programme of talks, presentations, and panel discussions covering what professional welding skills are required by industry, the career opportunities and progression pathways available, and how we can work together to address the skills gap.

Innovation Centre Showcase and Brokerage Event
The Innovation Centre Showcase provides a structured introduction to TWI’s Innovation Centre network and its role in driving industry-led, collaborative innovation.
A moderated panel discussion brings Centre leads together to explore cross-cutting themes (e.g. digitalisation, net zero, materials, manufacturing, sustainability), opportunities for joint working between Centres, and how industry and SMEs can engage – either as project partners, challenge owners, or adopters of innovation.
The Brokerage Session provides a highly interactive platform for developing collaborative project ideas aligned with UK and EU funding priorities. Participants will discover new project concepts, connect with potential collaborators, and explore relevant funding routes through expert insight, targeted pitches, and facilitated networking.
